What Nokia to gwt next?

Hi everyone, my 1st post, im in need of some advice...

Ive currently got the N85 (its my 1st ever Nokia & tbh ive had nothing but trouble with it) but anyway my contract is finished soon &  I want another Nokia, although the N85 has been nothing but a pain, when it has worked it has been better than any Samsung/Sony Ericcson ive had.

Ive seen the N900, the supposed 'iPhone killer' Ive also just seen that X6 which is a very nice looking phone but i have no idea what its features are or how it stacks up against the iPhone or N900.

Basically I want an iPhone killer, I want a smartphone. Im not an iPhone fan, a few mates have them, my main problem with the iPhone is its poor camera & no flash!

Ive read on the internet somewhere that the N900 is 'stage 4 out of 5' to Nokia's smartphone generation

this website isnt the one i originally read it on but this has the same point - 4 out of 5

http://www.umpcportal.com/2009/10/nokia-n900-sneak-peek-from-the-maemo-summit/

On the website i originally read the info, there was specualtion to the stage 5 being an N910 or a name to something of this nature (typical Nokia style kinda)???

I wondered if anyone had any info on what Nokia has coming up this year?????

or basically a guide to which Nokia to get next, do i get the N900 or do i wait for what Nokia give us next in 'stage 5'?

thanks

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

Nokia will be releasing symbian^3 and maemo 6 products this year. However I would advise to not buy them yet this year. Me, and a few posters here and moderators from other cellphone boards agree in principle that is unwise to buy a smartphone that has not yet received a major update, basically a less than 6month old model. So for instance, The n97 was launched like the middle of last year, it would only be now, more than 6months later, would I consider buying it. This is mainly to avoid the initial glitches and bugs smartphones of all brands often has upon release.

That said, I feel that it is unwise to think of buying the x6 this early in its release, and n97 and n86 are just entering its stable production stage. As such, I would recommend you buying either.

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

thanks for the advice.

My current contract doesnt end until October this year but there is no way im gunna wait till then to get a new phone!

I have noticed this pattern in previous phones I have had, ive got them on contract early after they were released and later down the line they have started to mess up on me. its been replaced with a new phone, which has then been relativley stable.

Im thinkin on getting Phones4U to buy me out of my contract with 6 months left which is what i usually do. which would be around March time. but then again, i need a phone as a back up incase the one im currently using breaks. so i might just downgrade to the lowest tarrif (on Vodafone) and pay it off my self. then start a whole new contract, no drawbacks or limits as to what phone i can get because they would be putting cash towards.

I was told that a hell of a lot of the n97's were sent back because of glitches which put me off getting one of them.

like i say, ive got my eye on the n900 mainly but i dont wanna get it in say March if Nokia are gunna be bringing out a better phone in April, although like you say i would be wise waiting a few further months after its release.

do you have any examples of symbian3 or maemo6 phones that are going to be released?

to be quite honest i havent a clue what either of those mean, i just wanna know which is gunna be THE best Nokia to be released this year which i can then take out on contract

[ Edited ]

No, there have been no official announcements of what phones they are. symbian^3 and Maemo 6 are mobile phone operating systems. Currently the n97 and other Nokia touch phones are operating on s60v5, or symbian^1, and the n900 is operating on Maemo 5. Nokia will be skipping Symbian^2.

Here are sneak peek previews of the new OS.

EDIT: I also advise you to buy generic handsets instead of branded ones or those which a network provider sells, as these tend to get firmware late, and also has the greater chance of getting bugs due to the tinkering of network providers and carriers on the firmware.

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

So what are the most important features for you in a phone ?

You mention smartphone, what is actually a smartphone, some say its the ability to multitask if that is the case iPhone is not in that category.

If you are looking for good camera and flash then have you considered 6700classic ?

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

@sudude - 6700classic is an s40v6 phone. Its not a smartphone.

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

Agree with chanchan05 here, though I wouldn't even need to wait out for Symbian^3, as that is still going to be some time away. As Kristian said, there are a few devices out there that are about to hit v30 in a few months time, and thus will be very stable firmware wise. Coupled with the drops in prices, there are bargains to be had.

I sound like a salesman I know, but it's true :smileyhappy:. Nokia does have quite a large range of models, so it can be a little tough choosing what one you want to get since some of them are quite good :smileywink:

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

yep i know 6700classic is not a smartphone, but it was unclear to what usage the phone was aimed for in the beginning of the thread.

If camera is the key thing in addition to normal phone usage (calling and SMS) then it does not need to be a smartphone to full fill that.

And isnt N900 a "computer" rather than smartphone ?

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

He stated he wanted a smartphone, and he stated that he previously owned an n85. Meaning he had full use of a smartphone and its applications. He'll just get frustrated at buying a feature phone having used a smartphone before. Believe me, I done that way before.

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

It sounded like he did not really enjoy the N85,

"Ive currently got the N85 (its my 1st ever Nokia & tbh ive had nothing but trouble with it)"

and it sounded like camera was the thing he was after

"Basically I want an iPhone killer, I want a smartphone. Im not an iPhone fan, a few mates have them, my main problem with the iPhone is its poor camera & no flash!"

just to be clear what is understood as smartphone in this case ?

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

He did say HE WANTED A SMARTPHONE, and he also said that when his n85 worked it worked better than all his other phones. I just gave him a warning that in buying a smartphone, he should not buy a model early in its release to steer away from the bugs. And a feature phone could never be an iPhone killer. An iPhone would beat almost any feature phone in anything EXCEPT camera quality.

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

No need to shout :smileyhappy:

Sounds like you know what a smartphone is (the definition). So perhaps you could explain it to me ?

All the times I have been some stores looking for next phone to upgrade I have been offered these expensive Symbian phones. But the persons trying to sell them have not really been able to tell why I should spend more money on them. I have heard these from the sales people,

- smartphone has multitasking, but iPhone does not so does it then mean iPhone is not a smartphone ?

- smartphone can run other than Java applications, Android phones can run only Java applications does it mean its not smartphone ?

Re: What Nokia to gwt next?

IMHO, a smartphone is a phone that can be made to do things apart from what is stated on the spec sheet (i.e turning your phone into a wifi hotspot, flashlight, word editing, etc). You buy a smartphone regardless of its features, but rather you look for its hardware. A feature phone on the other hand cannot do anything not stated on its spec sheet (other than java apps).
