Re: N97 fw update 2.1

xbungle, thank you for your information about new firmware for N97. I have one question regarding Ovi Maps. Does free version of Ovi Maps 3.03 will be implemented in this new release?

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

I appreciate it very much that Nokia (xbungle) informes us about the new firmware. Thank you.

I have in some way the same question as erura, but from another point:

I didn't read anything about memory managment, but I thought that the problem with Ovi Maps 3.03 for the N97 was the memory handling of the N97.

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

thank you very much xbungle. that is all we are asking for! to be informed! it is great to know that we only have to wait 3 more days and not 3 more months. that is, if you can keep your word this time...

anyways... i dont know if the improvments you listed are the only ones or there will be more. what i would like to ask about is this:

what about the random restarts and turn-off??? that is seriously the most annoying thing ever and apperantly many people are having this issue. for myself i can say that right now the phone is "calm"-only restarts itself between once every 2-3 days and 2 times a day. there was a time though that this was much much worse and it would get up to 5 times a day if not more. moreover, practically everyday when i wake up i find that my phone is turned off (the battery is fully charged). i think this is one of the main concers N97 owners have and i hope you took care of that. i run my life on the phones calander, and if it turns itself off then that causes me a lot of issues in my personal life.
the second thing is not being able to exit applications through the "open apps menu" (long-pressing the menu button). when i do that, the phone crashes. im not sure how many other peopple are having this issue but ive noticed that a few do.
p.s.
for some bizzare reason ive noticed that this only happens when my phone language is set to hebrew, when its set to english, i can exit apps through there. i can see how this bug my be a "minor" one, but if you havent looked into it yet, please do.

thank you very much.

and please keep us informed!

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

That's great news! I hope that new firmware really will be released on this Monday and it will include new version of Ovi Maps because this programm takes SO MUCH space on disk C. Nokia N97 really needs this improvment.

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

So what's the hold up? If a definate date for release is set then I'll assume the update must be ready if not and and you go and discover that there's actually more work to be done will it be a case of postponing again or will you release as is?

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

@xbungle Thank you very much ; 1 For the update, and more importantly 2.  For keeping us informed (a notice yesterday would've been ideal even if just to say announcement not quite ready and would've stopped moaning here because people are now so suspicious) a huge and muchappreciated improvement.

I'm also reasonably confidant that it should do the job as a lot of testing seems to have gone into it - will it include Ovi Maps 3.03 rolled into it? or should we update to that first and then V2.1 or other way round?

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

Thanks for the information xbungle.

I have to say that as the customer this is the type of information that I would like to see communicated more swiftly, Nokia is a day late with this information update and would have received less criticism by telling us earlier that the firmware update would be a couple of days late.

That said I will wait to see what improvements this firmware update it brings, because as xbungle quotes:

What's new
The software contains many fixes and improvements on the earlier releases including:

  • Improved call reliability
  • Smooth touch screen scrolling
  • Browser improvements
  • Music player improvements
  • Improved image and video stability

What I am hoping is that xbungle has highlighted the most visible improvements but that there are many more under the hood improvements for stability and the likes, as the word 'including' seems to be the operative word in his statement in my opinion.

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

lol! i believe this is the start of "operation brain-wash". in 3 days (V2.1) all the settings will be the nokia default and you will not be able to change them. it would say nokia everywhere on the phone: in every menu, and on all the lists, every other name\field would be "nokia". V20 has randon crashes, V21 would have the phone randomly saying stuff like: "you love nokia". "nokia is the best cellphone company in the world". "nokia is the only choice for you". "you love your flagship device".

Many thanks for this information xbungle

I am sure that there are many posters here, and on other boards, who will be gratified that this information has been made availale.

As expected, the update being only a minor one is for bug fixes only, and contans no new major innovations.

It looks like the maps 3.03 will be available as an additional download and not incorporated into this firmware. Probably it will be incorporated into firmware 3.0. BUT, we live in hope for our C drives and wait and see!

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

While I appriciate the fact that some info has been released I still find it bemusing how we've got all excited by it. The guy has not even explained why it didn't arrive on the 28th as promised. Don't forget that not everybody will be getting that update on the 1st and will back on these forums to mourn about it.

Calm down folks, after all this is the N97 we dealing with it ain't gonna be easy to fix.

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

Hi,

I've had an N97 (product code 0570817) since early November and I'm on the O2 network and using V12.0.026 software (which is OK). I've tried NSU many times but it will not permit a further update. I wasn't too bothered about upgrading until the map update was released, which will only work with v20 software.

Who's at fault? Nokia or O2? Please help.

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

I think its O2's fault because my phone was branded but somehow i  took it to nokia caare and it got unbranded and i could install a new firmware again :smileywink:

Re: N97 fw update 2.1

Fault is always on operator side. O2 should update their firmware as soon as Nokia release new version. Unfortunately branded firmware (like O2) is always delayed.

Do you think a Nokia repair centre can resolve the issue?
